The 4 Day Restore From Backup - Something Seems Wrong
I have a TFS server running on a virtual server that I recently wanted to restore from a know backup and was surprised when the Acronis software told me it would take 4 days. That's right- 4 days!
Here is how it all went down. I had made a full backup of the system it came in compressed at about 6GB. I didn't have it split the archive up into <4GB chunks so that they could be fit onto an iso and be mounted as a DVD on the virtual machine- that was probably mistake one. I created an Acronis Recovery .iso. Booted the server up on the recovery CD and was planning to do a full image replacement. I had the 6GB backup on a share located on a NAS. The Acronis recovery software booted the machine as expected, I chose recovery and full image and then selected a network path to the Acronis backup file. Go! After running for 15 minutes or so it started the restoration with a countdown indicating 4 days to completion. What????
I wouldn't believe it on the 4 days. We have all seen those where it starts out slow and then 10 minutes later it has 4 hours to go instead of 4 days except this was round two of this attempt. I had done a different restore operation in the exact same environment earlier in the week and it had told me 1 day and 14 hours. Not believing and wanting to see if it could be remotely correct I let it roll. Guess what. It tool 1 day and 14 hours. So I have no doubt that it would take this recovery 4 days. So what's the deal?
I suspect it has to do with the network share and the single file size of 6GB and I can't help but think if I were doing it from a local DVD I'd see something a bit more reasonable. Either way I'm about to take a different approach and will let you know what I find.
