Invitation for Thoughts on 'How do you branch for code promotions and handle your build definitions and common build scripts'

The title says it all. I have been playing around with a number of scenarios of how to best handle code promotion branches, or any other branch for that matter in which you need to ensure that your build script versions stay in tact with that branch.

Beware the Tipping Point in Technology Specialization

First my disclaimer. This is not related to Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point . Not intentionally related at least. I have never read it. Yes, I know, having not read it is considered poor form in many circles for someone that makes some attempts

Are You Impressed With Cluttered Screens or Do You Need Lots of Windows to Be Productive?

I consult a fair amount with Microsoft Team Foundation Server, though not nearly as much as I would desire. DAMN YOU, MOSS . As part of that I try to keep up with what similar products do and don't do and how they do it, especially in the area of application

Negative Thinking and MTTF

I recently ran into an opinion piece by Dr. Atul Gawande titled " The power of negative thinking ". You can find a copy of the piece at the New York Times. It made me reflect again on negative thinking and its role in software development. *Note you will

Agile Deep Dive at MIT Sponsored by GBC/ACM Part 2

I'm now sitting in a hotel in Rutland, VT. First, in an aside, let me say I understand my wife's comment when I said I was coming to Rutland for a week. She went to school at University of Vermont and law school at Vermont Law and worked as a prosecutor

The Mean Time to Failure Software View a.k.a What the Hell are We Doing?

What the hell are we doing? As a software professional I am very frequently asking myself that question. I'm not certain we know. Or maybe we know but we continue on anyway. Today I have a general dissatisfaction with the world of software development.

Perceptions on ScrumMaster Training After Day 2 a.k.a I'm a CSM

Okay. I finished up day 2 of the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) course. I went in very skeptical but found it all very worthwhile. I learned a lot. I cleared up a lot of questions that I had and answered a lot of questions I didn't know to have. The enthusiasm

TFS Work Item XML Export Part 2

In a post a few days ago I discussed TFS Work Items represented as XML. I promised at that time to report when a wiki page had been created to collect stories (requirements) for the creation of a backlog I have created said wiki page. You may need to

Perceptions on ScrumMaster Training after 1 Day

I have been pleasantly surprised with the first day of ScrumMaster training. The insights that are simply lost in translation from author to book to reader is very large. This has closed that gap or as might be referred to as clearing an impediment. We

ScrumMaster Certification

I'm very excited to be attending a two day seminar given by Dr. Jeff Sutherland, one of the co-creators of the original Scrum methodology. I come out of this as a certified ScrumMaster as recognized by the Scrum Alliance . I have to admit I am not a person

TFS VC Branch/Merge and Streams

As a response to Eric Lee's post about TFS VC and Streams I started this as a comment to his blog entry then decided it was too long and would thus make it my own entry with a pingback. I recently did a demonstration with a potential client that was moving

The 12 Step Program for Activist Consultants

This is the second installment in the series, if I may be so bold as to call it that, on Consulting Constraint, Consulting Activism . This is the 12 step program for Activist Consultants. It may not be what you expect. It's all affirmative and doesn't

Spec#

I'm very excited to pass along that Spec# has a new release. I personally am very interested in Spec# because I am a big fan of assertions (though I far too often don't practice what I preach) and this is a giant leap beyond that. Check it out. I love

Consulting Constraint, Consulting Activism, Judicial Constraint and Judicial Activism- unlikely bedfellows?

*WARNING- work in process. Multiple revisions and reposts to come. Software development always involves a client and thus always involves consulting to that client. How much and how active that consultation creates a spectrum of consulting constraint

J.D. Meier Post

J.D. Meier's blog is one i read fairly religously. Much I agree with, some things make me think and I don't know whether I agree or not and yet others gte me started off in areas that very much like to discuss. One of hist lastest posts on Structuring

I love posts like this

Jeff Beehler writes We recently ran a bootcamp for some of our internal teams on the testing capabilities of Visual Studio Team System and used a bunch of blog articles already available on the web. Seems like this list might be useful for others so here

A Sample Four Day Team System Envisioning

I perform a lot of work with Team System often in some sizable companies. As such, I often do a envisioning, or POC phases with a client that can run from days to weeks depending on the nature of the client need. As an example of an agenda that might

Borland Open ALM

My feed burped up Mickey's post on an eweek article on Borland Open ALM . You can find Borland's Open ALM introduction on their site. Very interesting. I plan to read more on it and see what it is. Sounds like a lot to promise to me if there is a backend

Team System Chat a surreal experience

It was a surreal experience in the Team System Chat that occurred today. What was surreal about it you ask? Well, that on the question asking side was Eric Lee . It was strange to see him as a participant asking questions of the experts versus being on

Team System Chat Today

Don't forget to join the Team System Chat today, if you can. I have a meeting that will likely take me right up to the time it starts but hope I can make it myself. Join the chat on Wednesday, February 7th from 10:00am - 11:00am Pacific Time. Add to Calendar

I couldn't agree more--- Martin and Keyword expansion

Martin Woodward posted a new entry on keyword expansion on his blog. This is the perfect example of where I should probably be blogging my comments I make to other people but often don't think about making those comments and request for feedback to the

TechEd 2007 the build up

TechEd 2007 registration opened up recently for registration and for submission of Bird of a Feather Session. I am still waiting on my invite to make a call for papers proposal but have yet to receive one. ;-). Last year, I did a birds of a feather session.

Your longest running team project

*Note- I actually started this post November 1, 2006 and it has sat in my Draft folder for some time. I had a friend ping me about some screwed up work item fields in some projects and this reignited my need to push this post out. I spend a lot of time
